Important Information - Spring Term
Here, we will post important dates and information.

This half-term, children will require their PE kits on Fridays where PE will take place in the afternoon. Please ensure children are equipped with kit for both indoor and outdoor lessons. Where children have ear piercings, they must remove these for PE and be capable of taking out their own jewellery. Please see our uniform policy for further information. Year 4 will be swimming on a Wednesday this half-term. 4TL will now have Violins on a Wednesday also.

March 2024 - Spring Term

Our Geography unit Italy began by identifying the layers of the Earth before creating a topography map of Europe to show the elevation of land. We identified the parts of a volcano and explained how living near a volcano can impact a person’s lifeLeasowes values were in action, especially when we collaborated to create an erupting model volcano, while using biscuits to demonstrate the tectonic plates definitely combined learning with enjoyment! What is more Italian than pizza? Through D&T we were able to apply principles of nutrition using a range of techniques to prepare our own pizza base and toppings based on market research. Writing a persuasive leaflet about visiting Pompeii included a description of the awe-inspiring Mount Vesuvius. Linking with our new text, Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit, we used noun phrases and figurative language to write descriptive pieces to describe the city before and after the eruption. We discussed Article 25 and how children can be placed away from home for their care or protection, like the characters in the story. We thought that Democracy linked well as in order to share opinions and be democratic, people need to be accurately informed with facts about world affairs where there is potential risks of natural disasters.

February 2024 - Spring Term

Welcome back!

As we enter a new half term, we will begin to engage with a range of new units all linking to our new geography unit 'Italy!' where we will explore how the physical geography of Italy can impact the lives of the people living there. The children have shown great levels of enthusiasm towards this unit already and we have been extremely impressed by some of the facts they have discovered about volcanoes and the city of Pompeii. For example, did you know that the city of Pompeii was burried under 7 metres of ash! We cannot wait to see what other facts the children discover throughout this exciting unit of work.

This half term, 4TL will be engaging in a brand new musical adventure with the violins. These should be brought into school on a Wednesday ready for a new set of skills to be taught every week.

In D & T, we have started our new food technology unit where children will be given the opportunity to try a range of European foods and ultimately design and create their very own Italian style pizza. More information about this will follow.

Swimming will sadly be coming to an end for Year 4 this half term so please ensure that the children bring their swimming kits every Wednesday.

Thank you for your support so far this year.

Miss Sharrock, Mrs Thomas, & Mrs Keen

Janurary 2024 - Spring Term

Happy New Year!

As we enter a new calendar year and a new term, we start a range of new units of work from famous landmarks in art to Europe (including Russia) in geography. The children have returned with an enthusiasm to learn and we cannot wait to get cracking with all this new learning.

It is nearly the children's last half term swimming and 4EB's last half term with the violins. 4TL prepare yourselves as your musical opportunity is just on the horizon!

November 2023 - Autumn Term

Welcome back to Year 4’s class page! The weeks are flying by as we creep towards the Christmas break. We are thoroughly enjoying our work on our first Year 4 Unit ‘Anglo Saxons and Vikings’. The children have loved reading ‘How to Train your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell and have adopted the role of Dragonologists very well. The children produced some fantastic non-chronological reports on their individualised dragons alongside their remarkable sketches of dragon features.

To add context to our novel, we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in our History lessons. Year 4 have loved identifying the areas of Britain which were named by the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings that still exist today. We are amazed at how absorbed the children are by this unit this year and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the extra learning that children have been doing at home.  In Design and Technology lessons, children have been busy creating design criteria for a Viking longship sail which they then used to plan prototypes for a longship sail in small groups. In the coming weeks, the children will spend a whole day creating the base and sail of a Viking longship and assemble them to withstand the conditions of the North Sea. The children will then test their sail designs and identify strengths and areas which they would like to develop. We cannot wait to see the children’s prototypes come to life!

Already this year, Year 4 have faced place value, coordinates, the four operations, methods of multiplication and shape! Utilising our ‘orange retrieval’ approach, children have been recalling previous learning to help them with new. We are very impressed with the children’s determination and perseverance in all lessons to fill any gaps in their learning. In order to ensure the children are fully prepared for the multiplication check in the Summer term, and to ensure they are sufficiently developing their mental maths skills, we have a discrete mental maths lesson each Friday. This lesson works on a bi-weekly focus. One week the children complete an MTC and revise all their timestables whereas on the alternate week, a new table is introduced. So far this half term we have revisited the 6x from Y3 and introduced the 7s and 9s. We are also encouraging the children to continue practising their times tables on TT Rockstars at home and are regularly checking the children’s engagement with this.

Finally, we have begun our Animals Including Humans unit in science by looking at teeth. We completed a comparative test to look at the effect that different liquids have on our teeth over time using an egg and a variety of drinks. We enjoyed watching the eggs change every day, and the milk… well that was a science experiment in itself! A very strong stomach was required. We then, quite literally, delved deep into the digestive system completing a practical re-enactment of food travelling through our bodies. The children thoroughly enjoyed mimicking this messy process and learning about how the body breaks down the food into substances that the body can use. We are now focusing on food chains, food webs and grouping animals into different categories such as diet, habitat and classification. Again, it is wonderful that the children have such enthusiasm about this unit.
