Handwriting and Letter Formation
Subject lead: Miss Ashton
At Leasowes Primary School, we have a clear and consistent approach to the teaching of handwriting and letter formation. We use Letter-join to support and structure our handwriting teaching from EYFS through to KS2, ensuring progression and consistency for all children.
Letter-join provides all the knowledge children need to form letters and numbers correctly, starting from the very early stages of mark-making and pencil grip, through to forming letters accurately and developing joined, cursive handwriting. It clearly demonstrates the correct formation of each letter and includes a simple rhyme to support children’s understanding and memory.
In Reception, children are taught print letter formation, which complements our Little Wandle phonics programme and its associated letter formation rhymes. This ensures a smooth and supportive link between phonics and handwriting development.
Our consistent approach helps children to develop good habits early on, enabling them to meet expectations for:
- correct letter orientation
- appropriate sizing
- accurate letter formation
- confident joining of letters as they progress
Handwriting at Home
We also provide home learning opportunities so children can practise and develop their handwriting skills outside of school. Letter Join can be accessed at home, allowing children and families to view videos that model correct letter formation and handwriting techniques.
