What a first term we have had in Year 6. This cohort are already exceeding all of our expectations!
Another half term has flown by and we have loved reading our latest class text, Once by Morris Gleitzman as it roots our learning about WW2 in reading. This novel tells the story of Felix, a Polish Jew who breaks out of the Catholic orphanage his parents placed him in for his safety as Hitler's Nazis sweep through occupied Europe. Children were gripped as he journeyed through the war-torn country searching for his parents. As we finished the story, you could hear a pin drop and as the final page was turned, we even had a few tears (including from Mrs Widdett!) We are so pleased that so many children have raced to secure permission from parents to read the rest of the series: Then, After, Now, Soon, Maybe and Always.
In History, we have charted the chronology of events from the end of WW1, through the 1920s and 30s as WW2 approached. We learnt about the Treaty of Versailles and how the rise of Hitler led the world to another war just 21 years after the end of the Great War. We focused on how life changed for millions left at home as millions of people left their homes as part of Operation Pied Piper and were evacuated to safer areas. We had the immense privilege of welcoming Mr Tom Reader, who at 95 years old shared his memories of being evacuated to Staffordshire from the Broadstairs area. We added further context to our learning by developing our understanding of the Holocaust, reflecting on what could be learned from the Once text, a case study on Anne Frank and charting the timeline of Jewish Persecution through the 1930s and 40s. Children were brilliantly respectful as we delved into this mature area of history.
Condover, of course, was a real highlight of this term. Check out the Beyond the Classroom pages to learn more about what we got up to.
Welcome to Year 6 – an exciting and memorable final chapter of primary school! This year is all about growing in confidence, independence and maturity, as children prepare for their transition to secondary school.
Our Year 6 curriculum is rich, engaging and designed to spark curiosity. In the autumn term, we dive into the powerful history of World War I and II, exploring how these global events shaped the world we live in today. Across the year, children will take on more responsibility for their learning, make important contributions to school life and rise to new academic and personal challenges.
Some of the highlights of Year 6 include our unforgettable residential trip to Condover Hall, where teamwork and resilience take centre stage, and a moving visit to the National Memorial Arboretum, deepening our understanding of remembrance. Later in the year, pupils unleash their creativity in our Business Enterprise Project, showcasing their innovation and teamwork, before ending the year on a high with a show-stopping end-of-year production.
Year 6 is a special time, filled with learning, laughter and lasting memories. We can’t wait to see all that this brilliant group of children will achieve as the Class of 2026!
