At Leasowes we place an importance on the core subjects of English, Maths & Science where we teach children to master key academic skills. However, we also passionately believe in providing a curriculum that is exciting, engaging and purposeful. We are currently redesigning our curriculum, ensuring a well-rounded coverage, based around challenging books to drive the topic and age group, to encourage an enjoyment and love of reading. We use ‘Letters and Sounds’ alongside innovatively planned ideas from our staff, to teach phonics skills to our key stage one pupils. We build upon the children’s learning of phonics and reading throughout Early Years and key stage one through the use of ‘Phonics Bug Club’ books and the recent purchase of the Collins ‘Big Cat Scheme’. With the help of our PTFA, we are also setting up the ‘100 book challenge’ by purchasing the top one hundred books for each year group in key stage two. Children will be challenged to read as many of these as possible through the year. Also, over the forthcoming year, key stage two children will receive their own interactive 'Reading Cloud' profile where they can create an avatar, blog, write book reviews and make recommendations to friends based on the books they are reading. In addition, they will have access to over 900 eBooks by well-known authors to select from. We are hoping that this investment will have a significant impact on reading for pleasure within key stage two, as well as guide the children to choose books of appropriate challenge.
Watch out for our new curriculum overviews that will be added soon. Pay particular attention to the ‘memorable moments’ used to help ‘hook’ children’s learning and make it fun and more purposeful.
